History of Allington Castle

History of Allington Castle

Allington Castle carries with it a deep and enriching history. From its early origins in the 11th century to its current status as a stunning private residence, the castle has undergone various transformations under the stewardship of many influential figures.

Early Beginnings

In the beginning, the location of Allington Castle was occupied by a manor house, recorded in the famed Domesday Book of 1086. It was replaced by a stone castle built by the Norman knight Sir Stephen de Penchester.

The Wyatts

In the 15th century, Allington Castle found a new owner in Sir Henry Wyatt, an esteemed adviser to Kings Henry VII and Henry VIII. Despite falling into disrepair after Wyatt’s death, the castle remained a notable fixture of historical significance. For more in-depth information, visitors can read our Wyatt page.

The Conways’ Era

The castle underwent a significant period of transformation in the early 20th century under the ownership of Sir Martin Conway and his daughter, Lady Agnes Conway. Sir Martin, a well-regarded art critic, historian, and mountaineer, alongside his wife, took it upon themselves to restore the castle to its former medieval grandeur whilst incorporating elements of modern comfort.

The Carmelites

After the Conways’ ownership, Allington Castle found new guardians in the Carmelite Friars during the mid-20th century. As a retreat house, they added depth to its history. Discover the tale of LEUTFRIDUS, the wooden statue that binds the castle’s past with the Carmelites.
